Bourne in Leederville Traditional Cache

Geocache Description:

A nano in a park next to a historical location.

 

Vincent St Leederville is of significance to my family whose ancestors a couple of generations ago lived on Vincent st where the new building 297 is. My Great Grandmother was widowed when my Great Grandfather died whilst operating a crane which collapsed with him inside during construction of Forest Chase in Perth. With the compensation money the house on Vincent was purchased. My Grandfather had to drop out of school at 14 and go to work as an apprentice carpenter with the same company. Until the day he was married when he was 30 he took every pay packet he received straight home and gave it unopened to his mother.

Family folklore is that the house was directly opposite the Leederville Oval Gate and the family (not having much money) would climb onto the roof and watch each game from there.

This cache is near one of the last of the original weatherboard houses in the area 245 Vincent Street.

Built in 1915 by Albert Bourne. This is a typical example of a weatherboard cottage. Owned by the Bourne family until 1973 when it was purchased by the City of Perth, as a consequence of the widening of Loftus Street. In 1995 ownership was transferred to the Town of Vincent. In 2000 the house was renovated by Aboriginal youth, under a skills training program, and refurbished for leasing.

My family probably new the Bourne family so I thought it an interesting place for a cache.
