This geocache is located across the highway from the sign describing the historical Fort Crawford built in 1880. The fort was only active for 10 years. This geocache is dedicated to a group of boy scouts who are each working on their Geocaching Merit Badge. Have fun!
This geocache is located on the east side of this busy highway (opposite side of the road from the historical sign). It is a micro so please bring tweezers and a writing tool.
The fort was built in 1880 because the Colorado settlers wanted protection from the Ute indians. The fort, originally named "Cantonment on the Uncompahgre" provided protection and garrison duties until 1890 at which time these services were no longer needed. The fort was renamed in 1886 after Captain Emmet Crawford. He was killed earlier that year in northern Mexico while he was fighting Geronimos Apache Band. When the fort was no longer needed the buildings were sold at auction and the land was opened up for settlers.
