Geocache Description:

An earth cache in a two hundred year old stone quarry.


This is the site of an old rock quarry, but it's not your normal hole in the ground that you get in this area.   There are railway embankments, buildings and slag all over.  This was clearly a sorting or management station.  There is a notice board but it has been vandalized and so I can't add more info.  

If cachers would like to add some detail about the history of the location I will add this to the listing with credit to them

 

The GZ takes you to a 'square' in the middle of an old mine site.  You are to look at the big rock isolated in the middle of the square, you can even see it from Google satellite images

Please read the description of how some rock can be formed and then answer the questions below

The vast majority of  all stone is created through a simple sedimentary process.  That is to say that material sinks to the bottom of a body of water and it settles.  If the particles are mostly sand and grit suspended in the water you get a standard sandstone.  This type of stone is the type in which you will find fossils.  This process is where animals fall to the bottom as they die and are covered with particles before they rot away. Simple sedimentary sandstone rock is generally hard and weathers well.   If the vast majority of the particles falling are animals or shells of animals you get a limestone. This rock is white or very pale and can be heavily creviced as it washes away since it is much softer than sandstone.  Once rock is formed like sandstone or limestone it can me metamorphosed in two main ways, by pressure, heat or both.  If rock is subjected to heat, like volcanic heat, it will melt.  This changes the properties and look of the rock.  Simplistically, sandstone will turn to granite and limestone will turn to marble.  Both of these rocks are very hard and very durable and this type of rock can be identified because if it is open to weathering it can be smooth and shiny.  If sedimentary rock is subjected to pressure, this can cause the structure between the layers to melt and any sideways pressure will result in a sheer.  This process will make slate and can be identified by the rock having many this layers.

1) Describe the texture of the rock, it is always wet and cold so be a little more imaginative please.

2) What process has this rock gone through? Choose from simply sedimentation, sedimentation followed by heat or sedimentation followed by pressure.

3) If this were a table, how many people could comfortably sit round it?
