Uno de los lugares más curiosos y sorprendentes de la isla de Ibiza se encuentra muy cerca de la carretera que une San Antonio e Ibiza, a medio camino de los pueblos de las parroquias de San Rafael y Puig d’en Valls: se trata del barrio residencial conocido como Montecristo.

Lo primero que sorprende la primera vez que vemos esta montaña es ver un monumento tan alto, tiene 23 metros, encima de la pequeña montaña. A todo el mundo se le viene a la cabeza que parece una versión a la ibicenca del famoso Cristo Redentor que se encuentra en Rio de Janeiro, aunque éste sea 14 metros más alto. Pero la historia del monumento de Montecristo, como veremos, mucho más sorprendente.

También es sorprendente que a pesar de su tamaño, se trate de un monumento prácticamente desconocido por la mayoría de turistas y también por una gran parte de ibicencos. Y eso que Montecristo es fácilmente visible cuando bajamos desde San Antonio hacia Ibiza tras pasar el túnel de San Rafael, a mano izquierda: la silueta del monumento se recorta alta en el cielo. Además, todas las noches el monumento de Montecristo se encuentra iluminado y vale la pena una visita, aunque sea por curiosidad.

El nombre de Montecristo es bastante reciente, ya que el monumento se construyó en 1947, de la mano del escultor valenciano Antonio Sanjuán. Sin embargo, el nombre oficial del monumento según la Diócesis de Ibiza es el “Sagrat Cor de Jesús” (Sagrado Corazón de Jesús) o, simplemente Cor de Jesús.

La montaña, sin embargo, tiene otro nombre: Puig de na Ribes. Antes de la construcción de la colina, algunas casas de familias ibicencas se encontraban desperdigadas por la montaña y un molino se encontraba en la actual localización del monumento del Cor de Jesus. Justo enfrente de la estatua, hay un excelente mirador a la ciudad de Ibiza, con Formentera al fondo, a Puig d’en Valls, Jesús y el conocido como Pla de Vila, donde aún se puede ver que quedan muchos campos de cultivo.
