Piazza Mercato è una delle piazze storiche di Napoli, gli Angioini ne fecero un grande centro commerciale cittadino; qui si svolgevano le esecuzioni capitali, come quella di Corradino di Svevia, e quelle dei giacobini dopo la soppressione della Repubblica Napoletana del 1799. La piazza è celebre per essere stata il luogo dove ebbe inizio la rivoluzione di Masaniello.
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale i bombardamenti alleati danneggiarono gravemente la piazza e i suoi stretti dintorni, cosicchè nel dopoguerra è diventata un enorme parcheggio, e molti commercianti hanno abbandonato la piazza.
La Basilica di Santa Maria del Carmine Maggiore e la Chiesa di Sant’Eligio Maggiore sono tra principali monumenti della piazza insieme alle due settecentesche fontane-obelischi, che purtroppo subiscono continui atti di vandalismo; a partire dagli anni 2000 ci sono stati diversi tentativi di riqualificazione della piazza, ma il degrado rimane elevato.
La Chiesa di S.Eligio è la più antica di epoca angioina della città, è in stile gotico, e fu costruita nell'anno 1270; ha subito numerosi rifacimenti, e poi danneggiamenti dovuti ai bombardamenti alleati nel 1943. La chiesa è stata infine restaurata, mettendone in luce l’impianto gotico, elegante e austero.
L'arco che collega il campanile della chiesa con un edificio vicino è del quattrocento; sul primo piano vi è inserito un orologio, sotto la cui cornice sono rappresentati Irene Malarbi ed il duca Antonello Caracciolo.
Il duca Caracciolo, innamoratosi di Irene Malarbi, fece condannare ingiustamente suo padre chiedendo le grazie della donna in cambio della sua liberazione.
Caracciolo riuscì nel suo intento, e il padre della donna fu liberato, ma la famiglia di lei ottenne giustizia da Isabella d’Aragona, figlia del sovrano Ferdinando II: Caracciolo fu prima costretto a sposare la giovane e poi decapitato.

Piazza Mercato is one of the historic squares of Naples, the Anjou made it a big city shopping center; here took place the executions, such as that of Conrad of Swabia, and those of the Jacobins after the suppression of the Neapolitan Republic of 1799. The square is famous for being the place where began the revolution of Masaniello.
During II World War Allied bombing severely damaged the square and its close surroundings, so that the war has become a huge parking lot, and many traders have left the square.
The Basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine Maggiore and the Church of St Eligio Maggiore are among the main monuments of the square together with the two-eighteenth-century fountains obelisks, which unfortunately suffer continuous acts of vandalism; since the 2000s there have been several attempts to redevelopment of the square, but the high degradation remains.
The Church of St. Eligio is the oldest of the Anjou of the city, is in the Gothic style, and was built in 1270; has undergone many renovations, and then damage due to Allied bombing in 1943. The church was finally restored, highlighting the gothic, elegant and austere style.
The arch that connects the church tower with a neighboring building was built in 1400, on the first floor there is inserted a clock, under whose frame are represented Malarbi Irene and Antonello Duke Caracciolo.
Duke Caracciolo, in love with Irene Malarbi, he unjustly condemn his father asking graces of the woman in exchange for his release.
