Geocache Description:

There are 6 caches in the series from micro to small clip-top boxes. All caches are placed to be family friendly but on the circuit there are some steep slopes and you pass close to the River Eden, please be mindful of this if you have small children with you. Please keep dogs under close control and on a lead when passing through areas containing sheep.

Kirkby Stephen is a small market town in Cumbria. The town is located on the A685, surrounded by sparsely populated hill country, and about 30 miles from the nearest larger towns, Kendal and Penrith. The town has many cafes, pubs and fish & chips shops for refreshment and there is a large (free) car park situated in Silver Street 100 yards from the town centre. Stenkrith Park is south of the town on the B6259 where there is a small car park with wheelchair access to the old railway line. The river at Stenkrith has carved the rock into many fantastic shapes, collectively known as the Devil's Grinding Mill or Devil's Hole. This spectacular natural scenery has been supplemented, in recent years, by two human additions which appertain to this series of Geocaches. The ‘Poetry Path’ has 12 stones which were carved by the artist Pip Hall, with poems by Meg Peacock, depicting a year in the life of a hill farmer. The Millennium Bridge was opened in 2002, and provides pedestrian access from the park to a walk along the old south Durham railway track. This track, under the management of The Northern Viaduct Trust (NVT), is wheel-chair accessible from the car park but the caches are not. The old railway line is also a very popular dog walk, take care when accessing caches. In wet weather some of the footpaths can be muddy and slippery so please wear appropriate foot wear. Thank you to Walkers Welcome (Kirkby Stephen), Kirkby Stephen TIC and NVT for their assistance and permissions in placing this series of caches. Some boxes contain a log and pencil they are also large enough for small swaps and Trackables. Initially they will contain a small gift for FTF. If you complete the circuit please take only one and leave the remainder for others. Some of the smaller caches do not have room for a pencil, please bring your own.
