Geocache Description:

Radio-Frequency Identification

TargetRadio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is a wireless technology used to transfer data over short distances in order to identify and track objects. It is used in much the same way bar codes and magnetic strips have been used for years. While this technology is decades old, it is becoming more widely used in recent years due to the adoption of more complete standards and the lower cost and smaller size of the equipment involved.

There are many uses for RFID including; ID badges for access control, tracking of packages, baggage and goods, payment systems, such as toll and retail payments, and the timing of sporting events. RFID "chips" can also be implanted into animals and even humans to aid in identification. Many smartphones have the RFID capability as well (known as Near Field Communications, or NFC).

So ... why not an RFID geocache? This probably isn't the first time this has been done. Just the first around here. This should be an easy find and hopefully a quick stop. Once at the cache site, you will find instructions on how to open the container. Parking is available across the road.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Press and hold the Power button for approximately 3 seconds, until the blue light goes OUT
  • To open the container, TAP the tags on the sensor in the proper sequence. The tag you are currently looking for is indicated by the flashing red light.
  • Only hold the tag over the sensor until the blue light comes on, then remove the tag for verification
  • If you have the correct tag, a "good" sound will play, the red light will go solid, and the next light will begin to flash. If it was the wrong tag, a "bad" sound will play and you will have to go back to tag #1 and start over
  • If you can get all 5 tags in the correct order, without an incorrect tag in the middle, the door will be unlocked.
  • Turn the power off when finished (if it isn't already off) by holding down the Power button for 3 seconds, then close the door. Make sure all tags are inside the ammo can before closing the lid.

NOTE: If you close the door before finishing, you will have to turn the power back on and scan the tags again to reopen the door. The order of the tags will change every time the power is turned on.
