Geocache Description:


In the 19th century and during the Industrial Revolution, Lesvos supplied the European markets with first quality olive oil. The elegant French women of the salons bathed with perfumed pure olive-oil soap manufactured in the soap factories on Lesvos.
Mytilene’s olive oil and soap producers and traders built their mansions and estates in and around the city, in Plomari, Papados and in Molyvos.
They built their industrial facilities (factories, oil presses, etc) based on distinctive architectural designs, and played a decisive role in the island’s arts and letters as well as its social structure. Contact with Europe brought wealth and exciting cultural influences, the impact of which is still visible.
Mytilene olive oil, with its light texture and refined flavor, is fittingly reputed to be among the best in Greece.
Lesvos olive oil repeatedly wins prizes at international expositions.
