Jedyny teatr dramatyczny w Gdyni w ciągu swojej pięćdziesięcioletniej historii wielokrotnie zmieniał formułę i nazwę.
24 października 1959 roku odbyła się inaugurująca działalności teatru, zwanego wówczas Sceną Objazdową Teatru Wybrzeże, premiera „Ślubów panieńskich” Aleksandra Fredry w reżyserii Marii Chodeckiej, ze scenografią Mariana Kołodzieja. Kilka dni później zespół, nie posiadający własnej sceny, a nawet sali prób, ze swą pierwszą sztuką ruszył w teren, grając w salach teatralnych, remizach, domach kultury i świetlicach zakładów pracy całego Wybrzeża. Taką rolę – edukacyjną – przypisano zespołowi tego teatru, pod kierownictwem Waleriana Lachnitta.
W 1964 teatr zmienił nazwę na Teatr Ziemi Gdańskiej z siedzibą w Gdyni, przejmując zespół aktorski i kierownictwo artystyczne po utworzonej pięć lat wcześniej Objazdowej Scenie Teatru Wybrzeże.
W 1974 roku został on przekształcony w Teatr Dramatyczny, który w 1980 roku uzyskał swoją pierwszą stałą scenę przy ul. Bema, odziedziczoną po Teatrze Muzycznym.
W 1991 roku zmienił nazwę na Teatr Miejski. Dopełnieniem tego wieloletniego procesu przekształceń było przyjęcie w 2000 roku patronatu Witolda Gombrowicza.

The only drama theatre in Gdynia within repeatedly changed its fifty-year-old history the format and the name. 24 October 1959 was held inaugurating activity of the theatre, called the Travelling Scene of the Theatre Wybrzeze, premiere of "Maiden Vows" by Aleksander Fredro, directed by Maria Chodecka, with set design by Marian Kolodziej. A few days later team, not having an own stage, not to say a room of attempts, with his first art moved into the area, playing in stage rooms, fire stations, community centres and day rooms of workplaces of the entire Coast. Such a role - educational - assigned team of this theater, under the direction of Valerian Lachnitt. In 1964 the theatre renamed to the Theatre of the Gdańsk Earth based in Gdynia, taking team of actors and the artistic directors of the created five years earlier the Travelling Scene of the Theatre Wybrzeze. In 1974 it was transformed in Drama, who in 1980 received his first permanent next to Bema street. inherited from the Musical Theatre. In 1991 he renamed to the Municipal Theatre. Complementing this long process of transformation was the adoption in 2000 of patronage of Witold Gombrowicz.
