Geocache Description:

Spend a day on Ironbound Island viewing the sights

Saturday, September 12, 2015
Rain Date: Saturday, September 26, 2015

East Ironbound Island has appeared in TV shows, a book or two, and even a movie. It also probably has one of the highest cache densities of any large island in the Maritimes. This event will give people the chance to visit the island and tour its shores.

The event will occur on Saturday, September 12 with Saturday, September 26 as the rain date. A rain decision will be made a day or two beforehand.

The terrain rating on this event is a 5 because attending requires "special equipment"; namely, a boat. You may arrange your own transportation to the island or travel on a boat that is being chartered by the organizers. Eastriver is handling the mainland side of things and managing the charter passenger list. We do not want to overrun the island and disturb the people living there, so the arranged transportation to the event is being limited to 25 people. Put your "will attend" log below and you MUST contact eastriver to express your desire to come if you wish to reserve a spot on the chartered transportation (cost will be $20 and you must bring your own PFD). If more than 25 people sign up a waiting list will be created and people notified if there are cancellations. The group transportation to the island will leave New Harbour at 0900, and a second trip will be at approximately 0930 if required (depending on numbers). The day is expected to end by 1700. New Harbour is just off Hwy 329, via Hwy #3. Hwy 329 can be accessed at either Hubbards (Exit 6 of the 103 Hwy) or at East River (Exit 7 of the 103 Hwy). Hwy 329 goes completely around the Aspotogan Penninsula and there are many caches on that Route as well.

Use GCY1CF as the co-ords to find the wharf where to gather to travel to the island. Please do not park right there as this is a private area. Parking is available where the wharf road branches off from the main road going around the harbour. The coordinates are N44° 28.459 W64° 05.426

Islander1988 is handling the island side of things. The event will occur on his family's property at around 1p.m., so bring a lunch to eat and geocaching stories to tell. There will be the usual draw for FTF and "out"door prizes. He will also make his family's house available for washroom facilities and will be able to take people inside the island's one room school. Walking around the island will take place before and after the event, and Islander will act as a guide to share stories, keep everyone together, and guide people along the paths and shores.

How do you prepare for the day? Here are things to bring.

A. If you want to come on the chartered boat you must inform eastriver you plan to come in addition to posting your "will attend" log so we do not end up with more people than can be accommodated. The cost is $20 per person and you must bring your own life jacket. If the limit has been reached you will be put on the waiting list and informed if a spot opens up. If you are on the list but can not attend, please inform eastriver as soon as possible so someone else can take your spot. You are also welcome to make your own travel arrangements if you have a boat or know someone with one.

B. A boat is needed to reach the island. Everybody must bring their own PFD/lifejacket.

C. The return trip to the mainland will occur around suppertime.

D. Bring a lunch, snack foods if desired, but definetly bring water. There is no garbage pickup on the island, so please plan to carry out any food wrappers or other trash you may have.

E. The terrain varies, and can be anything from a good gravel road to seaweed covered rocks to a forest path to going up a sloped cliff face. A good hiking stick may be very useful that day. Good footwear is a must. As people have discovered, reaching some of the areas is a real challenge, and some caches need to be timed with the tides. There are spots where avoiding wet feet can also be a challenge.

F. Don't forget your fly dope and camera.

G. A few special trackables will probably be made for the event; we shall see. :)

H. These are the cache types available on Ironbound. The mystery is your chance to grab a D5/T5!

We'll see you on the island!
