Geocache Description:

Congrats to SpiritGuide with the FTF!

Thanks for the great logs everyone.

On Sunday May 22nd 2011 a catastrophic EF5 tornado struck Joplin late in the afternoon killing 161 individuals and costing approximatly $2.8 billion.

At Approximately 5:49 p.m the tornado reached this residential area destroying everything.

This is the Site of St. Mary's School, Church and Rectory, all of which were destroyed by the tornado on May 22nd. It is also the site of Mount Calvary Cemetery.

The buildings here were completely destroyed, the Pastor ,who did survive, was on site and survived by taking refuge in the bathtub. The churches parishioner that showed up to help with rubble removal helped dig him out

This is a very moving location, the 30 foot cross was the only part of the building that remained standing undamaged. Today all that remains is the cross, as a symbol to the community of spirit and hope. Please be respectuful.

Feel Free to log your visit with a memory or Photo from durring or after the tornado.

The church hopes to begin work on their own memorial in the following months
