Horfield Baptist Church was founded in 1882 as a group called the Pilgrims Band that met in a house in Thornleigh Road. Over a number of years the congregation grew and a plot of land on Gloucester Road was sought. In 1889 the "Iron Chapel" was opened for the public. A few years later in 1894 land was secured on Brynland Avenue and plans for erection of a School Chapel (now known as the Griffin Hall) were submitted, finally opening in 1895 with room for 500 people. In 1899 plans were submitted for what we now know as Horfield Baptist Church which opened in 1901. In 1922 the Memorial Building was added as a commemeration to 40 members of the church who lost their life in the 1914-18 war.
The current sanctuary includes seating for 1000 people and an impressive organ built by Hele & Sons with over 1300 pipes. In recent years the church has added a modern sound and projection system. Unfortunately the church is not publicly open every day. Youth groups including Scouts & Guides, as well as other community activities are held each week.
