Geocache Description:

Congrats to kelciraedesigns with the FTF!

On Sunday May 22nd 2011 a catastrophic EF5 tornado struck Joplin late in the afternoon killing 161 individuals and costing approximatly $2.8 billion.

At approximately 5:51 p.m. the tornado came across joplin high school as an EF5 tornado.

As luck would have it, this was the day that Joplin High School had scheduled for graduation. The school officials had made the decision earlier to hold the ceremonies at Missouri Southern State University to more easily accommodate the crowd. That decision ultimately saved thousands of lives. Things could have ended up a lot worse that day.

Please alert me when the log is nearly full so that i can plan to change it out.

Please be careful when opening cache as to not drop anything, and to replace it as you found it. Also Please try to keep this hidden so it will last. Permission granted by owners at their board meeting.

After the tornado passed one day someone had noticed that the front entrance sign was missing a few letters, and had taken the liberty to rename the school using silver duct tape. That is how it came to be known as HOPE high school.

Here across the street stands the rebuilt Joplin High School that is finally in operation as of 2014. The school is larger and has large safe room type areas in the event of another tornado. Discussions of originally moving the school were quickly squashed as  pictures of the sign at the front of the school circulated. It was soon realized that this school was a huge symbol for the enduring people of Joplin. It showed the Hope and strength of the community had come together for the Cleanup and rebuilding effort.

In aftermath of the storm, the student had trips planned and activities scheduled, most of which were all canceled voluntarily to be able to aid with rescue efforts.   Later that summer with an announcement there was another bash planned to revive the project graduation.

This Cache is located across from the high school at another Joplin landmark in Sunny Jim Park, home of Joplin South Little League. It was hit hard by the tornado and destroyed beyond use. Little league teams from all over offered support to help rebuild. More of the rebuilding story can be seen at Joplin Little League.
