Geocache Description:

Mana Island is a mammal-free sanctuary off the Wellington west coast. It wasn't always that way. Display boards near the island landing beach summarise the story of pest eradication and biosecurity on Mana Island.

To complete this multi-cache you will need to land on the island near the display boards. Visitors to the island are permitted between 8am and 5pm each day. Please take special care before you venture out to Mana Island to ensure that you are not carrying any mice, rats, insects (especially ants) or any seeds in your clothing, bags, boots or any vessel used to reach the island.

At the listed coordinates is a display board that summarises the removal of mammalian pests from Mana Island and alerts you to known biosecurity hazards, especially the risk of weed introductions. Mana Island was first site in the world to successfully eradicate mice from an island larger than 100 ha. Use the display boards to answer these simple questions:

A = Number of bait stations placed on Mana Island to remove mice - ?500

B = Farmed cattle were removed from Mana Island in April 198?

C = Day of year the last mouse was captured on Mana Island.

D = Number of letters in the scientific name of the vine illustrated with white flowers (v...)

E = Sum of the number of mice caught in a bucket trap in one night (as photographed)

F = The mouse density study was completed in Feb 19?2

G = Number of sheep and cattle still living on Mana Island in 2015

H = Mice were probably introduced to Mana Island in the 18?0's

Check sum = 40
