This is a public accessible point and the cache is hided outdoors.
This is an ideal starting point for climbing the surrounding summits. You can climb Karisimbi (4507 m), Visoke (3711 m), Muhabura (4127 m) and Gahinga (3474 m) from this base camp.
Karisimbi: This is the highest mountain of Rwanda. It needs no special technical skills and no special equipment except rubber boots are highly recommended. The summit is reached in two days, starting at Visoke village at 2500 m and sleeping on the high camp at 3600 meter. The summit is unfortunately disfigured by an antenna and some buildings.
Visoke: Has the same starting point as Karisimbi, Visoke Village. The approach is also the same. This summit can be done in one day but you are not allowed to go to the very top since it is on Congolese territory Rubber boots recommended. The crater lake on top is the high light.
Gahinga: The smallest of the Virunga volcanoes in Rwanda. Easy one day goal.
Muhabura: Very good destination according to me the most worthwhile summit in the Virungas. It has a small pristine crate lake on top. It has superb views over the countryside. Approach only recommended by car - very long way. One day up and down 1900 meters in height expect a long day hike. Start early and be prepared to come back in dark a headlight is helpful. No rubber boots necessary only hiking shoes. Note: Muhabura can also be climbed from the Uganda side (Kisoro).
Sabynio: Is unfortunately off limits from the Rwanda side. It is the most picturesque Volcano of all with its 5 peaks where it has its name from - old man's teeth. It can be climbed from Uganda (Kisoro). It is a one day hike with 1500 meters in height gain. Be aware you are vertigo! Although the NP administration has improved the trail on top it is still nothing for people who are afraid of heights. In this case stop at the first summit. The highest point is reached after going down after the first summit and go up again reaching the second summit. Here you need to go down again and very steep and exposed up to the highest point.
Mikeno: The Matterhorn of Africa is currently off limits since it lies completely within Congo
Have fun climbing the Volcanoes of the Virunga chain and the ones who are interested in a special story read the book "Alone to Mt. Everest" A great story of an early expedition to the Virungas.
