Douglas Mawson. Australian Antarctic explorer.
Douglas Mawson was born in England, came to Australia as a child and moved to Adelaide as a professor of geology. His first Antarctic voyage was in 1907-1909 where he was in a party that was the first to climb Mt Erobus and to reach the south magnetic pole. He lead a second expedition in 1912 which left from Hobart in 1912. Mawson lead a 3 man party exploring the coast and then heading across a glacier one of his companions fell to his death in a crevass. They lost a lot of there supplies. Douglas and his remaining companion became extremely sick on there forced return to there base camp as they were running out of food and were forced to eat some of their dogs. They were actually suffering from vitamin A poisoning from eating the dogs livers. His remaining companion died along the way. Mawson was 160km away from help. Mawson was still very unwell but eventually made it back to the base only to discover that their ship had sailed only hours before. Six men had remained to search for him and they all wintered a second year. Mawson while in very bad health survived this extended stay, he was able to sail back to Australia the following summer. He went on to write a book called Home Of The Blizzard. This was one of the greatest stories of survival in the history of exploration.
