Shek Wu Hui (石湖墟) is a old market place at Sheung Shui. Shek (石) means stone or mine, Wu (湖) means lake or pool and Hui (墟) means market in Chinese. It was so called because the place was a stone mine (a pool of stone) before it became a market in the 1930s.
There was two big fire in the 1950s and 1960s, therefore most of the buildings in the market area was built in 1960s. There were many old fashioned business in the market area. However, as the mainland Chinese tourist flooded in, many of them shut down and become pharmacies or gloceries store. Smugglers are now very active in the market area.
The gz is inside the Shek Wu Hui playground. It is a playground inside the market area with 2 basketball field and some children playing facilities. However it is now become the packing area of smugglers.
