The Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is endemic to Norfolk island. One of Norfolk’s best known symbols and common across the Island, this magnificent tree can grow as tall as 60 metres.
When Captain James Cook discovered Norfolk Island in 1774 and saw these pines he thought they would be suitable for masts and sparts for the British Navy, but this did not prove to be the case.
Cultivated around the world as an ornamental tree, its wood is used for construction, wood turning and crafts. The seeds are a popular food for the endangered Green Parrot.
