Geocache Description:

what

Come and join us at Thorndon Park Earthcache Event from 10.30am to 1.30pm on Wednesday 29th July and learn about the geology of Essex. Some 450,000 years ago almost all of Britain was covered by a giant ice sheet. The area around what is now Thorndon Country Park lay on the southern edge of that ice sheet and it was here that meltwater deposited sands and gravel scoured from the land - sometimes many tens of miles away - by the moving ice. Two very knowledgeable and enthusiastic local geologists will guide us on a walk around the park and explore what the humble pebble can tell us about the geological history of the area. We plan to publish five earthcaches to coincide with the start of the event and the walk will visit all five, so paying close attention to our guides will be rewarded!

We will meet at 10.30am at the Countryside Centre at Thorndon Park North. All attendees may claim First To Find on each of the earthcaches released at this event, providing they fulfil the earthcache logging requirements and post their log within fourteen days of the event.

The walk itself should take around an hour. Depending on numbers attending we may decide to split the group and run several walks. Aside from the new earthcaches, there are nearly twenty traditional caches and one multicache in the park, so you may wish to stay for more caching after the close of the event. Or, if you have little ones with you, you may wish to take a break from caching and follow the Park's Gruffalo Trail. There's plenty to keep you busy!

Meet the Gruffalo
Meet characters from the Gruffalo in the woods

The visitor center

We will be providing children with Gruffalo trail handouts so that they can enjoy finding the characters in the woods and also Essex Parks will also be hosting a barefoot walk for us, so bring your towels and sense of adventure. Dogs are welcome at the event, but must be kept under control. There is a small parking charge for parking in Thorndon country park. If you will be attending several of the events during Mega Week hosted in Essex Country Parks (Rocky Ride Extreme, Glaciers and Gruffalos, The Highwayman's Horror, Mersea Day, Cudmore Grove CITO) you can save money for purchasing a car parking ticket for just £10 which is valid for the whole of Mega Week. This also entitles you to visit any other Essex Country Parks during the week.
