This in a park by the current terminal of the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. This RR hauls passenger trains on weekends using Steam Locomotives from here to Rockaway. Dinner Trains continue north to Wheeler. There are also other scenic trains heading into the Coast Range. This is the reappearing portion of this series.
The Disappearing portion of the cache is related to the line the tourist railroad uses. The Port of Tillamook Bay owns the line. POTB is the old SP Tillamook Branch. It ran from the Blimp Hangers south of Tillamook, up to Wheeler, then inland along the Salmonberry River over to Banks and Hillsboro.
The portion of the line thru the Coast Range was destroyed just a few years ago with a major flood. It wiped away the right-of-way and trestles. POTB decided that for what little traffic occurs on the line, and that washouts are a regular occurrence, that trains will probably never go from the coast to the Valley ever again. This is sad.
It is hoped the line from Garibaldi to Tillamook might reopen again for the tourist RR. The Tillamook Station was moved from downtown to the Blue Heron Cheese Shop in 2011. So maybe this will happen. We'll see. While here, please be sure to read the close by interpretive sign about logging railroads.
