Geocache Description:

Located southeast of Lower Kwai Chung, Kau Wa Keng used to be known as “Kau Pa Keng” or the “Doggy Crawl Trail”, named after the crawling postures that villagers take as they climb up the extremely steep slope to reach the village. This name was changed as villagers think the name was vulgar and also likened the villagers as dogs.

The village has about 300 years of history and most of the villagers were originally of the Tsang clan. The clan still maintains its ancestral hall and traditional customs, such as “lighting lanterns” during Lunar New Year. The village has three ancestral halls and “Yiu Kung Tze” (address 26A, Kau Wa Keng Old Village) was built before 1905 and serves as a location for worshipping ancestors and holding clan meetings. Most of the buildings in the old village were rebuilt in the styles of western bungalows in the 1920s and 1930s and the majority of them are over 80 years old. The only old village house untouched was built using traditional Chinese style. It was said that the President of Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou and famed Chinese artist Huang Yong Yu resided in the village during their youth.

The cache is hidden next to a playground and 九華新村村公所. Please be stealth.
