In 1904, the Methodist Church trustees purchased this site on the corner of Kensall Well Fields, Durham Road for twenty pounds, to build a new Methodist Church in Chester-le-Street. Foundation stones were laid on 21st June 1905 and the new church opened on 24th March 1906. The total cost of the building was £2800. Work to build a new schoolroom began in August 1953.
In 1978 the Connexional Commission recommended that the Durham Road Church be sold, and the Central Methodist Church refurbished. As a result this Church closed in 1978 and was eventually sold. In 1981, having survived three applications for change of use to residential dwellings, one for retirement flats and another for change of use to a photographic studio, the empty building was bought by Evangel Church, an Independent Pentecostal Fellowship. The original Evangel church was started in Bullion Lane School. A full renovation programme started in 1983 and the Church was officially reopened as Evangel Church on May 21st 1983.
