Geocache Description:

Why 'Hopping off point'? It was originally my fairly optimistic plan to place a cache at every paragliding take off point on the island, however when I sat for even a moment and contemplated the idea, it occurred to me that this was ambitious at best.

PLEASE NOTE: It appears that vandals have destroyed the plaque which gave the co-ordinates for this cache. The good news is that I have included a photo which can be referred to, just look in the gallery and it can be found there. The other bad news (aside from wanton destruction of the property) is that this therefore degrades the puzzle stage of this cache somewhat - sorry for that, but it's beyond my control for obvious reasons.

Paragliding is a sport/pastime undertaken by enthusiasts who attach to themselves a harness with a fabric glider, which inflates above their heads and takes the pilot, unpowered by any engine, soaring up into the air like a bird, sometimes many thousands of feet.

Cape Greko is one of the most stunning settings to experience paragliding and I have enjoyed several such flights here. This cache is hidden within a stone's throw of the launch site.

Below is a link to a video of a flight at this site; enjoy!

The clue co-ordinate is reached by parking at the car park signified by the waypoint and then walking for about 5 - 10 minutes.

The co-ordinates given do not lead to the cache, but instead will lead you to a feature. On this feature you will see a number of plaques.

Look for a plaque with a poem which begins; ‘from Cyprus…' and ends '… to man’. In the SECOND line of text, use each letter (irrespective of case) in the order they occur to represent numbers 0-9. Each letter can only represent one number, so disregard duplicates (and punctuation) in order to find the cache co-ordinate as coded below:

N 34 57.ham E 034 Fm.nht

IMPORTANT note: It is not possible to walk in a direct line from the first clue to the final cache co ordinate, so PLEASE do not try! Instead, it will be necessary to walk back to the car park (way point) and from there a fairly obvious track to the SW leads on to a moderate to steep footpath and then onward to the cache. Please note that the route is NOT suitable for wheelchairs or anybody with physical infirmity, since the final part will require a short scramble up a slope off the footpath. From the car park it is perhaps a 10 minutes walk. Once the cache is claimed, one can continue if desired in a round route and follow a path back up to the saddle below the first clue, or return the way one came. The return route is slightly shorter.

Once you have obtained the co-ordinate for the cache from the above clue you may alternatively approach GZ by 4x4 vehicle to within about 20m.

The cache is a medium sized 'lock & lock' container and was well stocked from new with a log book, pen/pencil, a FTF certificate and a good number of small swaps. When taking something, please be sure to leave something in its place for future cachers.

PLEASE be cautious during busy tourist season and try to avoid being seen from above and bear in mind the risk of the cache being compromised by curious 'muggles'. Finally PLEASE ensure that the lid is securely sealed down when replacing the cache.

I hope you all enjoy this one!

Congratulations to sammytweetiepie OR possibly Brandi Sour for FTF honours!

One last point worth mentioning, please mind your footing on the last part of the find, due to some tricky terrain and in winter some prickly foliage!
