Geocache Description:

Otter Lake Cemetery

Otter Lake Cemetery is located in the woods to the west of the Greenhead Road, very near the waste management facility. When HRM decided to use this area as a waste management facility, they cut off a portion of the original road and built a new road. You will note a large accumulation of boulders blocking the entrance to the original Greenhead Road. In order to get to the cemetery you must climb over the boulders and proceed up the original road.

The Otter Lake Cemetery contains two headstones: Martha, wife of James Umlah, d. February 16, 1895 and their son George d. May 8, 1883. James is buried in the Greenhead Road Cemetery.

Excerpt: A Walking Guide to the Old St. Margarets Bay Road
Author: Wayne Rogers (with permission)

The Otter Lake Cemetery trail sign was discovered while exploring the area with PinkFoxglove, but we didn't discover the cemetery that same day. I went again two more times on my own and still did not find the cemetery. I was able to obtain the phone number of Wayne Rogers who wrote the book "A Walking Guide to the Old St. Margarets Bay Road", and told him about the difficulty I was having locating this cemetery. Wayne offered to come to this location with me and I took him up on his offer. We walked in off Greenhead Road and he took me right to the area he thought it should be. Wayne walked past the headstone because he was expecting it to be leaning up against a tree. I was walking behind Wayne and I spotted it laying a few meters off the side of the trail on the forest floor. We took a couple pics of it where it was laying and then we stood it up against the tree again so it doesn't get buried by leaves and debris and become lost forever. The co-ords that are in Waynes book were out by 60m and the co-ords I had been given by Mirror NS were out by 65m. This location would never have been found without Wayne knowing the approximate location. Wayne graciously allowed me to take two pictures of him with the headstone, which I have uploaded to this cache page, and he invited me over to his house after the hike where he gave me a copy of his book and signed it for me. This hike was a memorable one and it was great to find the last cemetery of this series with him. The individuals buried at this location are related to Wayne, as are some of the individuals at other cemeteries located nearby, including his great great grandparents. Thank-you, Wayne, for coming out to help me locate the Otter Lake Cemetery!

BEWARE OF AN OPEN PIT THAT IS LOCATED ONLY 2M FROM THIS HEADSTONE, HIDDEN BY EVERGREENS THAT HIDE IT WELL.

This geocache contains no writing device. Enjoy the hike, the history, and the smiley!
