LOCAL INFORMATION

The Rother Valley Walk is a permissive trail that takes you along the western banks of the River Rother from North Weir in Midhurst to the Woolbeding estate through land owned by the Cowdray Estate, National Trust and private landowners. The River Rother is one of seven main rivers draining the national park. It is the only one to drain west to east and there is over 56km of the river within the Park boundary. The river itself supports important fish nurseries.

The wildlife habitats adjacent to the river include semi-riparian vegetation, wet woodland and wet grassland, all of which support a wide variety of invertebrates, bird species and populations of mammals such as water shrew and otter. The fish species in the rivers and streams of the national park include salmon, brown trout, bullhead, European eel and brook lamprey. The River Rother is lined with alder trees which thrive in wet ground. Further along the floodplain of the River is a poplar plantation which are a hybrid between the black poplar and populous inter Americana.

DISCOVERING MORE

Rother Valley Walk

The Rother Valley Walk leads through the national trust land of the Woolbeding Estate. The parkland here is all ‘Open Access’ land. Woolbeding Common is a lowland heath supporting rare birds such as woodlark and nightjar. The common is home to specialist insects such as long-horned beetles and the heather and gorse provides a habitat for reptiles. In order to maintain this special landscape active management is necessary. The site is grazed by traditional breeds such as Belted Galloway cows, Sussex cows and Herdwick sheep.

The Rother Valley Walk is very close to the town centre of Midhurst where you can walk amongst Midhurst’s historic Tudor buildings along the Midhurst Town Trail.
