Villa Caritas was opened in 2011 as a Geriatric Mental Health Care Center. On the site previously was the Pineview Home opened in 1962 by the Misericordia Sisters as a 38 bed residence for unwed pregnant women. It fit with the Sister’s mission of caring for women and children at risk. Over the seven years it operated it provided shelter to over 850 young women. Pineview Home was closed in 1969. From 1969-2007 the building continued to be the home for programs that served the community – including programs for people who were vulnerable or at risk. .
Bricks and Masonry were salvaged during the demolition of the Pineview building and were used in the construction of Villa Caritas. A row of existing bricks were installed around the perimeter of the building and were also used as the feature wall in the main entrance of the facility. The existing masonry veneer was installed on a exterior feature wall which holds up the main entrance canopy. Another design feature of note is the window awnings that are held up by recycled telephone posts. The pillars to these are held up by concrete posts with stylized crosses.
