Jefferson Davis Memorial, Capture Site of the Confederate President. Irwinville, Georgia: A small little stop in the road with lots of historical significance. Near the "town" is the spot where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured by Union soldiers while fleeing from the Presidential home, heading west to meet up with other rebel forces to continue fighting for the "lost cause."
I'm fortunate to live nearby and have access to the park my whole life so placing my first cache here was a "given". I'm hoping it will help make more people aware of our little jewel. It has been placed with permission of the park manager. (Say hi to John if you see him! He loves to share the history!) When State Park funding was cut, the park was turned over to Irwin County. Dedicated "friends of Jeff Davis Park" help ensure its future as a public park. Donations are most welcome! The park is open for visitors daily. However, the museum is only open Wednesday-Sunday, 9 -5. (Closed Monday, Tuesday, & all Major Holidays). Very kid friendly with plenty of room to run, and a playground. Plan to bring a picnic lunch or stop just up the road at Morehead's Country Store and see what they have to offer.
