Geocamping in the Burren Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Eclectic Penguin: Time to go to bed for this one.

A FANTASTIC thanks to the camp site owners for this who helped in every way!

Shame about the local dog that kept on barking throughout the night when most people were staying here for the event on Friday/Saturday night :( Continuously. Without stopping.

I lost a lot of sleep too because of that confounded mutt.

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

You are invited to a Geocaching camping event, held at Corofin Village Camping and Hostel, in the heart of The Burren, which will take place on the evening of Saturday 22nd of August, 7pm-11pm. The event is open to all whether camping (be it canvas or metal), or day visitors and is in the centre of The Burren, and area of great beauty and has quite a number of caches too!

Geocamping in the Burren

The camp site is in the heart of Corofin village, with a separate area set aside for us for the weekend. Electrical hookup is available for both tents and mobile homes - ask for this when booking if it's required. There is free WiFi which has recently been extended to serve the entire camp site.

Please note that, although there is a hostel associated with the camp site (as seen in its name), it is fully booked for the weekend of the event for a French school group.

You will need to book directly through the camp site, whose web site is listed above. When booking please tell them you are coming to the "Geocaching event" or "Geocamping In The Burren". They would like to know roughly how many are coming so that they can set aside an area for us. Let them know also if you require Electrical Hook Up or other specific requirements. Could you please also state in your Will Attend log if you're camping, caravanning or day visiting - and also the number in your group.

The location is an excellent spot to tour this spectacularly beautiful region of Ireland with the Burren (Irish: Boireann, meaning "great rock") internationally known for its unusual extensive karst landscape of Limestone paving. The Burren National Park is one of six National Parks in Ireland and the smallest in size (15 km²). Three quarters of Ireland's species of flowers are found in the Burren.

A mere 10 minute drive from the campsite is a site of pilgrimage for many a fan of the television series Father Ted. Probably the most recognised building in Ireland, Glanquin House - or more commonly known as Father Ted's Parochial House in the series.

Glenquin, the \

Further afield, only 30 minutes away by car is the ferry to the spectacularly located Aran Islands or the Cliffs of Moher. For those who like show caves there's Aillwee Cave, which also features in Father Ted as The Very Dark Caves in the episode The Mainland (also an Earthcache).

There is a comparitively high density of geocaches in the region including the excellent Carron Loop where each cache will take you to something interesting and often unique for this part of the land. There are also a number of Earthcaches in the area.

The camping event itself is open to all, be ye camping or just day visitors and will take the form of a relaxed evening of chat and getting to know each other – I'm encouraging people to come from much further afield than would normally attend an event and stay the night (or few), whether you choose to stay at the camp site, or perhaps in local bed and breakfast/hotel accommodation.

Barbecues are allowed – though site rules prohibit any barbecues or fires that damage the grass. Please bring your own food / refreshments - but remember, there's also a takeaway very close to the camp site. Also, you're encouraged to bring your own seating arrangements .

If the weather turns inclement we can make use of a spacious meeting and games room above the toilet block, which can be made exclusively available for our use.

If you've never been camping before, a Geocaching camping event is the perfect introduction to the "great out-doors" experience. I'd never been camping until I was encouraged to stay at the annual South Wales camping event in 2008, held in Swansea. A small tent isn't that expensive a purchase these days and in the summer months you need little else other than perhaps a torch, a matress and some bedding.

Trade Stands

This year, we will have at least one trader selling Geocaching relatied goods during the evening of the event.

Satellite Events

As in previous Geocamping events I've organised, I plan to have at least 2 satellite events nearby during the weekend.

The Great Inis Oírr Expedition

There will be an event cache on Inisheer on the Aran Islands on the morning/afternoon of the 22nd in Tigh Ned's Bar, a stone's throw from the boat pier. After the event, we may spend a few hours enjoying the scenery - or perhaps even hire a bike and go to find a geocache or two... Boat trip is around €20 but there is also an alternative if you're prepared to drive for about an hour and a half - a flight to the island takes only 8 minutes from Conemara Airport, west of Galway - a return flight costs around €50, but you do get to see the Cliffs of Moher from an unique angle!

Inchiquin Lough Litter Liberation

Around lunch time on Sunday there will be a CITO event taking place very close to the camp site's location. The camp site owners are on the local Tidy Towns committe and are most excited that a group of complete strangers would take an interest in helping them tidy a corner of their town - and will,I believe, provide all special equipment, and waste disposal for us.
