The Norfolk Island Tree Fern (Cyathea brownii) is endemic to Norfolk Island. This attractive tree fern is in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest in the world, and can be found in the gullies of the National Park and Botanic Garden.
Known locally as the “Punga” this tall tree fern usually grows to around 5-6 metres, however trees in the National Park can be seen reaching up to 20 metres in height.
The trunk of the Norfolk Treefern is much smoother than its close relative the rough tree fern. For the early settlers, the centre of the tree fern stems (the heart) provided good food for livestock. The Tree Fern is named after Robert Brown, botanist on HMS Investigator.
