This is a series of 8 winter friendly caches placed as a means of giving back to organizers and players alike of COAP 2014-15 ( as well as earning me a few letters required for a Scrabble Word ). If you wish to grab all 8 in one session you are looking at a round trip hike of about 4 kms from the parking waypoint.
I am not a snowmobiler but, this winter as I participate in the COAP challenge, I have come to appreciate the many snowmobile trails to be found in and around the greater Fredericton area. Here are a few interesting facts on the sport of snowmobiling that I read in a recent article in The Daily Gleaner. “ The vast amount of snow that NB receives in winters like this one is viewed as “White Gold” by Tourism NB as the sport of snowmobiling brings in the area of $22 million into New Brunswick’s economy from outside the province. There are 16,000 people a year who buy snowmobile trail permits, and 1,200 of those are in the greater Fredericton area. The Fredericton Snowmobile Club is one of 52 clubs in the province. It is run entirely by volunteers, operates two trail-grooming machines, two warming huts and maintains 147 kilometres of trails, of which about 60 kilometres are inside city limits.” The caches in this series are all placed not far off a snowmobile trail in Mactaquac Provincial Park which is maintained by the Nackawic Sno Drifters club. It is very popular with snowmobilers so, for safety’s sake, if you are walking down the trail do stay to one side and even step off the trail when snowmobiles pass. According to the president of the Fredericton club there has never been a documented accident involving a pedestrian and a snowmobile in New Brunswick. We wouldn't want a geocacher to be one of the first, so do exercise caution. ****** Congratulations ***** to pollywog56 for her FTF for this cache and the entire series on a very chilly February morning!
