Desert Flower is a 2009 Is a biographical film based on the Somali-born model Waris Dirie’s eponymous autobiography and is directed by Sherry Hormann.
From the Somali desert to the world’s catwalks. When Waris Dirie’s DESERT FLOWER appeared in 1998, the world was shocked. The former supermodel tells her breathtaking life story, describing her incredible journey from a nomadic life in the deserts of Somalia to the world’s most famous catwalks. This was a dream and a nightmare at the same time. In New York, at the peak of her career, she tells in an interview of the practice of female genital mutilation that she had to suffer when she was five. Waris Dirie decides to end her life as a model and dedicate her life to fighting this archaic ritual.
Waris Dirie (played by Liya Kebede) The autobiography of a Somalian nomad circumcised at 3, sold in marriage at 13, fled from Africa a while later to become finally an American supermodel and is now at the age of 38, the UN spokeswoman against female genital mutilation (FGM).
The real Waris Dirie had a small role in the James Bond film The Living Daylights.
The first project of the Waris Dirie Foundation, now called the Desert Flower Foundation, was preventing Safa, the small girl in the fgm scene from becoming a real life victim of this cruel ritual. The sponsorship program they developed was so successful that it quickly expanded and now saves hundreds of children each year.
