Peace in Our Time (Taranaki) Multi-Cache

New Plymouth was a town ravaged by war in the 19th Century, and then along with all localities in New Zealand, suffered the loss of their young men (and women) in 20th Century wars. Instead of celebrating war, this little journey celebrates Peace.

During the Taranaki Land War in the 1860s, New Plymouth became a fortified garrison town, under virtual siege. Most of the women and children were sent to the safety of Nelson and the remaining residents suffered hunger, deprivation and disease. Having known War first hand, this journey is a celebration of Peace in New Plymouth

A Peace Pole is a hand-crafted monument that displays the message and prayer on each of its four or six sides, usually in different languages.

There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world dedicated as monuments to peace. They serve as constant reminders for us to visualize and pray for world peace.

At the Start, to determine the coordinates of the second Waypoint;
Use the language on the North side to determine
S39° 03.ABC where A=(word4) B=(word1 - word7) C=(word2)
This side of the pole has been damaged...
Use the language on the East side to work out
E174° 04.NOP where N=(word5 - word4) O=(word3 - word1) P=(4th word doubled)

and off we go...

At the second Waypoint, use the plaque to the right of the doorway to determine the coordinates of Waypoint three;
For the South coordinates S39° 03.DEF subtract 532 from the date format DDMM
Use the number on the door multiplied by 107 for the East coordinates E174° 04.QRS

and off we go... but first, look up at the gable to see the relevance of this location

At the third Waypoint, to determine the coordinates of the fourth Waypoint (North is Japanese);
Use the language on the South side to determine
S39° 03.GHI where G=(word2) H=(word3) I=(1st word doubled)
Use the language on the West side to work out
E174° 04.TUV where T=(word3) U=(word6) V=(word1 - word5)

and off we go...

Waypoint 4: A notable tree, since antiquity considered sacred - a symbol of glory and peace, and branches were used to crown the victors of friendly games and bloody wars.

This particular tree commemorates a World War Two battle as described in the text of a plaque at its base.

The year of presentation, WXYZ
