This part of Somerville was the original township until such time as the Railway Line was built in the 1890's. The town wanting to be closer to the Railway moved further up the hill to its present location.
In 1864 some early settlers of Somerville - Alfred Jones, James Clarke and James Grant purchased a one acre plot of land and gifted this in order that a Church / School be built on this land. This building was known as The Union Church and School.
