La Bella ¿Desconocida o Reconocida? Multi-Cache

Tradicionalmente, la catedral de San Antolín (ese es el nombre eclesial de la catedral de Palencia) ha tenido el apelativo de “La Bella Desconocida” por ser una catedral poco conocida, pero ahora desde el cabildo de la catedral con la colaboración del Ayuntamiento y de la Junta de Castilla y León quieren relanzar esta belleza gótica (con restos visigóticos y románicos y añadidos de otros estilos –hasta romanos–) sobre todo como un gran proyecto cultural (quiere ahondar en la conservación, restauración y difusión del edificio) además de turístico (se tendrá acceso al triforio y a la torre, además de tener visitas tematizadas y nocturnas desde un nuevo lugar de acogida).

Tampoco queremos contaros al detalle lo que contiene la catedral, para ello mejor pasarse y visitarla (el nuevo “Centro de Recepción de Visitantes” se encuentra en el claustro y se accede desde la Plaza de la Inmaculada –coordenadas iniciales–) o consultar la descripción de este caché ya archivado “SREP La Bella Desconocida” o en esta nueva guía de la catedral.

Lo que queremos es haceros dar una vuelta por el exterior de la catedral (es gratis) y haceros caer en la cuenta de, o reconocer, algún detalle peculiar antes de ir a por el caché… por eso este multi caché.

Traditionally, the Cathedral of San Antolin (that’s the ecclesial name of the Cathedral of Palencia) has the nickname of “The Beautiful Unknown” for being not a very well-known cathedral. But now from the cathedral chapter with the support of the City Hall and the government of Castilla y Leon want to revive this Gothic beauty (with Visigothic and Romanesque remains, and additions of other styles, even up to Romans), especially as a large cultural project (want to delve into the conservation, restoration and dissemination of the building) besides tourism (people will have access to the triforium and the tower, besides having themed visits and nocturnal from a new placement).

We don’t want to tell in detail what is in the cathedral, for that better go for it and visit (the new “Visitor Reception Center” is located in the cloister and it is accessed from the Plaza de la Inmaculada –initial coordinates–) or see the description of the already archived cache “SREP La Bella Desconocida”, or in this new guide of the cathedral.

What we really want you to do is go for a walk around the outside of the cathedral (that is totally free) and make you realize of, or recognize, some peculiar detail before going for the cache… for that is this multi-cache.

Para hacer el multi caché 1: Puerta de los novios.

Junto a la cabecera se abre la del salvador o “de los novios”, en honor al enlace que aquí celebraron, en 1388, Enrique III de Castilla y Catalina de Lancaster, unión que puso fin a la guerra civil que asoló Castilla. De hecho en esta guerra Palencia fue sitiada y defendida por las mujeres, niños y ancianos, pues todo varón capaz estaba enrolado en el ejército, lejos de la ciudad.

Se sigue llamando “Puerta de los novios” porque es por esta puerta por donde entrar los novios el día de su boda en la Catedral.

For you to do the multi-cache 1: The door of the grooms.

Next to the head, it opens the door of the savior or “the grooms”, in honor of the wedding celebrated here by Henry III of Castile and Catherine of Lancaster in 1388. That union ended the civil war in Castile. In fact, in this war Palencia was besieged and defended by women, children and elderly, because every man was enlisted in the army, far from the city.

Para hacer el multi caché 2: El fotógrafo.

Esta curiosa gárgola (9ª desde la Puerta del Obispo) es como el astronauta de la catedral de Salamanca, una licencia de los restauradores para indicar que esa gárgola no es la original y que hubo que re-emplazarla. Fue realizada por el palentino Jerónimo Arroyo, arquitecto municipal y diocesano, además de consumado escultor, que dirigió una de las restauraciones de la catedral palentina. La gárgola representa al fotógrafo palentino José Sanabria, amigo del arquitecto, que falleció cuando hacía unas fotos desde el tejado de la catedral.

Se cuenta que el que se coloque bajo esta estatua y pida un deseo le será concedido, pero ojo, no deja de ser una gárgola y su función en los templos es la de demostrar que el mal reside fuera y la santidad dentro.

For you to do the multi-cache 2: The photographer.

This curious gargoyle (9th from the Bishop’s gate) is like the astronaut of the cathedral of Salamanca, a restaurateur’s license to indicate that this gargoyle is not original and it had to be replaced. It was made by the palentino Jeronimo Arroyo, a municipal architect and diocesan, besides sculptor, who headed one of the restorations of the Cathedral of Palencia. The gargoyle represents a friend of the architect, the palentino photographer Jose Sanabria that dies when he was doing some photos from the roof of the cathedral.

It is said that the person that placed under the statue and make a wish, it will be granted, but beware, it not ceases to be a gargoyle and its role in the temples is to demonstrate that evil resides outside and the holiness inside.

Para hacer el multi caché 3: Aliens.

Sí, has leído bien… aliens como los de la película y también un añadido fruto de otra restauración. Están situados en la Puerta de San Juan o de los Reyes y si no te fijas bien no los ves. Toma un poco de distancia respecto a la puerta y fíjate en lo más alto de la puerta, más en concreto en el remate de la arquivolta superior, justo en su centro: dos “aliens” enfrentados y mirando una flor de loto ¿o un bicho? ¿Curioso?

Yes, you read that right… Aliens like the ones in the film and also an added of another restoration. They are located in the door of San Juan or de los Reyes, and if you don’t look well you will not see them. Take some distance from the door and look at the top of the door, more specifically to the upper part of the archivolt, right in the center: two “aliens” faced and looking a lotus flower Or a bug?. Curious?

Se encuentra cerca de la catedral. De hecho se ve, y si visitas el caché a última hora del día verás y oirás a las cigüeñas, estampa típica de la catedral.
