There are two Tin Hau Temples on Ma Wan. This cache is placed near the one that has been rebuilt on the northern beach and is said to have been originally built by the local pirate Cheung Po Tsai, who often looked after the locals.
Cheung Po Tsai is regarded as one of the 10 most famous pirates in the world. He was the character played by Chow Yun-fat in the movie The Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World’s End. He was linked to several places in Hong Kong, the most popular and well known one is Cheung Po Tsai Cave, on Cheung Chau island where he stored his prizes. Cheung Po Tsai also built several temples dedicated to the goddess Tin Hau and seafaring activities on Ma Wan, Cheung Chau, and Stanley.
His personal life was quite dramatic, he was a fisherman's son kidnapped and eventually adopted by by the pirate Cheng I at 15. Cheung Po Tsai later took over the pirating business from his adopted parents. At the heigh of his career, his followers are said to have reached 50,000+ and his fleet said to have possessed 600 ships. His crew was instructed to never injure or hurt women. After he surrendered to the Chinese government in 1810, he became a captain in the Qing imperial navy, receiving the rank of navy colonel and an appointment in Penghu, far away from Hong Kong. He spent rest of his life helping the government fighting other pirates.
