Up until 1915, this cemetery was just a family cemetery for the Denny family. It was at that time the cemetery was named Washelli, which means West Wind, so one could also call this Cemetery the West Wind Cemetery and still be correct. In 1919 the Evergreen Cemetery company started a competing cemetery on the opposite side of Aurora Avenue, by 1928 The Washelli, cemetery company had taken over the Evergreen.
Near the cache is the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, originally a separate cemetery it was established in 1927, today that section alone has over 5,000 headstones. The Chimes tower was built in 1950. You might notice while touring the cemetery that there are several other sections of the cemetery, a Russian section, Lutheran, and many more, mostly along the north side. These were at one time each a separate cemetery, but by 1930 they were all under the Washelli umbrella.
The funeral home nearby was built in 1972, in 1994, Wachelli funeral home moved into a newly build facility on the old evergreen side.
