A actual freguesia que corresponde à paróquia de Santa Maria Maior, começou por ter origem na primeira matriz ainda no tempo de D. Afonso III, matriz esta devotada a S. Salvador no local então denominado Adro ou Átrio, templo este que hoje, já alterado e aumentado, é a actual Igreja das Almas.
Ainda no reinado de D. Afonso III, no ano de 1263, começaram a ser construídas as muralhas defensivas da Vila de Viana, mas que só ficaram concluídas 111 anos depois, portanto em 1374.Como a primitiva matriz ficou de fora dessas muralhas defensivas, no ano de 1400 começou a ser construída a actual Igreja Matriz dentro dessa muralha, Igreja esta que só ficou concluída em 1480, tendo nesta altura sido transferido o Orago de S. Salvador da antiga Igreja das Almas para a actual matriz.
Mais tarde, a Igreja Matriz viria a perder este antigo Orago de S. Salvador, tomando como Padroeira Santa Ana, nos finais do Século XVI que, por sua vez, foi substituído por Nossa Senhora da Assunção, sob o título de Santa Maria Maior.
Portanto, e concluindo, a freguesia de Santa Maria Maior, ao contrário da freguesia de Monserrate, que é mais moderna, apareceu com o nascimento da Vila de Viana no tempo de D. Afonso III, no memorável dia de 18 de Junho de 1258, data em que foi instituído o Foral de Viana, embora sobre a primitiva evocação de S. Salvador.
Depois teve o nome de Santa Ana para, finalmente, ficar para a posteridade com a denominação de Santa Maria Maior.
