Prve dionice ove autocesta izgrađene su od Orehovice do Kikovice 1971. i od Zagreba do Karlovca 1972. godine. Nakon izgradnje prve dvije dionice 1982. u promet se pušta dionica Kikovica - Oštrovica kao poluautocesta, a kao autocesta izgrađena je 2007. Dionica Oštrovica - Vrata, a kao autocesta izgrađena je 2008. Dionica Vrata - Delnice izgrađena je 1996. kao poluautocesta, a kao autocesta izgrađena je 2008. Dionica Delnice - Kupjak izgrađena je 1997. kao poluautocesta, a kao autocesta izgrađena je 2008. Dionica Kupjak - Vrbovsko izgrađena je pola kao poluautocesta, a pola kao autocesta, a kao autocesta izgrađena je 2008. Dionica Vrbovsko - Bosiljevo izgrađena je kao autocesta 2003. 21. listopada 2008. puštene su promet i zadnje dvije dionice Kupjak - Vrbovsko i Oštrovica - Vrata i time je izgradnja autoceste Rijeka - Zagreb završena. Na ovoj cesti plaća se cestarina.

The Croatian tolled motorway network and three-lane totaling 1288.5 kilometers. Network is managed by four companies. A6 highway goes from Bosiljevo to Rijeka. Connects Rijeka with Delnice and Karlovac and further to Zagreb trough A1 highway. The first section of the highway were built from Orehovica to Kikovica 1971 and from Zagreb to Karlovac in 1972.
