Geocache Description:

This puzzle cache is based around the Whitchurch Canonicorum Church of St Candida and the Holy Cross otherwise known as The Cathedral of the Vale. The headline coordinates are for parking at the church.

Inside the church is one of only two Shrines in this country to survive the Reformation with its relics intact ( the notable other being the bones of St Edward the Confessor in Westminster Abbey.) The Shrine here carries the Latin inscription "HIC-REQESCT-RELIQE-SCE-WITE" ("Here lie the remains of St Wite"). Candida is the Latin translation.

In the chancel is a highly decorated monument with a recumbent effigy of Sir John Jefferey, who died in 1611. There is also a brass plaque to Sir George Somers (ex Mayor of Lyme Regis and Governor of Bermuda) who is buried beneath the vestry except for his heart which lies in Bermuda

Outside in the well tended grounds you could see the memorial stone to Sir Robin Day 'The Grand Inquisitor' who ashes are buried here and also the grave of the Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov who was famously assassinated in London, in Sept 1978 with a ricin pellett fired from an umbrella.

Looking up the Tower you can make out several carvings in the stonework. There is an Axe and a Viking ship, a supposed replica of The Holy Grail as well as the Statue of St Candida.

About a mile away from here, at the waypoint coordinates, is St Wite's Well which still flows today. The waters are said to have curative properties particularly for eye conditions.

The cross of St Wite is incorporated into the Dorset flag.

To find the cache you will need to complete the coordinates below and this you can do at home. All you need is on the cache page. However, do not miss the opportunity to have a look around this beautiful church.

The cache will be found at N 50 45.??? W002 51.??? containing the customary FTF prize.
