The Glenmore Landfill started burying garbage in 1966 in the area formerly known as Alki Lake. Back then the dump was just that, a place to simply dump your garbage. Some may have memories coming home with some treasures (no scavenging anymore...officially at least) or even working on their shooting skills on the resident pests. You definitely were able to smell when you were getting close to the dump! Today, there are banned recyclables, sorting of loads and composting that can be a pain for customers but hey, you're helping divert waste from being buried! Materials such as wood, yard waste, asphalt shingles, concrete and metal are stockpiled and recycled or composted. Filling activities are engineered and regulated by the government. Garbage is buried in constructed and contained cells, leachate (water in contact with the garbage) is collected and treated and landfill gas generated is collected and burned or utilized. Gone are the days of being a "dump"! Be proud and breathe deep
