How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

A challenge for Geocachers visiting Skye, especially those who attended the Skye Geoclan Event in 2015.  The cache is at the listed co-ordinates.

This is a challenge to see how much you have learned about Skye and Raasay from the caches you have logged.

The cache IS at the posted coordinates, you may sign the physical log at any time but you MUST fulfil the requirements in order to log a find on geocaching.com!

If you sign the log before completing the challenge you may “write a note” on the cache page.  Once you complete the requirements, edit your log, change it to found, and change the find date to the date you completed the requirements and list the required information. Please do not write "found" unless you can list the caches according to the instructions. Logs which do not meet this requirement WILL BE DELETED.

RULES

  1. Only caches on the Isle of Skye and Raasay count for this challenge.

  2. You must have logged a different cache for each of the five categories listed below. (This cache does not count, even if you feel it meets the criteria!)

  3. As the cache owner, I reserve the right to delete any logs on this cache that I do not feel qualify.

  4. Past finds must all be logged with same user name to count for this challenge.

  5. You may only count caches FOUND not caches you own or have placed.

When you have completed the challenge please log your find this way:

GC number / Geocache Title /How the cache meets criteria if not obvious from cache title / Your Find Date

Here’s the challenge:  have you logged finds for each of these categories?

1. Historic and Prehistoric Skye

Either a. Find a cache which has a prehistoric or archaeological connection (i.e. more than 2000 years ago)

or b. Find a cache which refers to a building, battle or a historic incident which dates from before the 19th century.

2. Modern Historic Skye 19th and 20th centuries

Either a. Find a cache which mentions the clearances and/or the crofters’ fight for justice.

or b. Find a reference to 20th century history (e.g. WW1/2, Cold War memorials or structures.

3. Films, Fantasy and Fairies

Either a. Find a cache near a film location or which uses name of a film in cache name. Skye has been the location for numerous films. A few are mentioned in cache names – but can count any cache you believe is very near a film location (you can count adverts) http://www.scotlandthemovie.com/movies/fskye.html may be helpful but the site is not up to date – so if you want to use the location of a more recent film on Skye –that’s fine – I’ll probably know about it (have friends and neighbours who worked as extras etc!! .

or b. Find a cache which refers to fairies or other Skye myths and legends.

4. The Skies Above and the Earth Below

a. Dark Skies

Find a cache which is very near a designated Dark Sky Discovery Spot or which mentions dark skies in the cache title. Lack of light pollution makes the Isle of Skye an ideal place to view the stars. You can use this site to check the location of Dark Sky Discovery Spots: https://www.darkskydiscovery.org.uk/

or b. Geology: Log an earth cache.

The rocks of Skye represent an immense range of geological processes and around 1000 million years of history. Logging an earth cache is a great way to learn more.

or c. Mountains and hills

Log a mountain cache. Not everyone is up to climbing on the Cuillin so you can count a cache on or near the summit of any hill of any height or you can count any Trig point even if it is not on a hilltop.

5. Language

Gaelic is the traditional language of the Isle of Skye. Find a cache with a Gaelic title or which includes Gaelic words in the description or clue.
