At the Cache
The geocache is located just off the trail a short distance south of Mary Wade’s grave site. Inside the container is a fact sheet about Mary Wade. After reading it, please return it to the cache.
June 10 marks the anniversary of the birth of Mary T. Brantley Wade.
Finding the Spur
It is easy to miss the Mary Wade Spur along Arabia Mountain. Many hikers pass by the turnoff while heading toward the lake.
The trail begins just beyond a section where the Forest Trail detours around a fallen tree. Those who take the spur are often surprised by the shift in terrain. The half-mile path climbs a terraced slope, winds between large boulders, and leads to a quiet hilltop clearing.
Mary Wade
Mary T. Brantley Wade was born in Sandersville, Georgia in 1853. Her grave rests on land she purchased from her father, Dr. Levi Gaines Brantley.
Alongside her husband Thomas, she farmed this land for several years. The terrain would have made farming difficult, as their property was rocky, uneven, and spread across both sides of Rockland Road.
Mary passed away in 1888 at the age of thirty-five, leaving behind three children: Miriam, Effie May, and Grover.
A Quiet Mystery
Nearby are several unmarked graves. The spacing suggests that some may belong to infants, though no records confirm their identities.
It is possible that Mary chose to be buried here among them rather than in a larger public cemetery. Over time, much of the Wade family history became unclear, partly due to confusion between Mary T. Brantley Wade and Mary T. Dennard Wade, Thomas’s second wife.
Remembered Again
In recent years, updated genealogical records on sites such as Find a Grave and BillionGraves have helped reconnect descendants to Mary’s story.
Visitors and even distant relatives have rediscovered this site. Fresh flowers and small offerings have occasionally been left behind, a quiet sign that her story is still being remembered.
