Granite and Quarrying

These granite ruins reflect the building materials once commonly seen in this area and the lasting impact of the quarrying industry around Lithonia.

The granite of Arabia Mountain, known as Tidal Grey, was prized for both its strength and its distinctive swirl pattern created by gneiss. It was quarried for use in buildings, curbing, pavers, and even as a supplement for chicken feed. The granite of Panola Mountain, however, was never quarried because of its softer texture.

Ruins of an Earlier Roadside Stop

It is believed that these ruins once served several purposes, including a gas station, store, and residence. In earlier decades, especially in more rural areas, it was not unusual for a building to serve as both a home and a place of business.

As automobiles became more common, gas stations began appearing across the landscape, from busy streets to quiet country roads. In rural communities, a gas station was often added onto an existing store, repair shop, or other business. That may help explain the cluster of structures still visible here today.

The ruins are unstable in some places, so please do not touch or climb on them.

A Nearby Kindred Hobby

While exploring this area, you may also notice a nearby Letterbox. Letterboxing is a similar adventure game that blends navigation, discovery, and hidden containers, making it a fun companion to geocaching for those who enjoy exploring places like this.
