These granite ruins are an example of commonly-seen building materials of the area and the impact of the quarrying industry in the Lithonia area. The granite of Arabia Mountain, called Tidal Grey, was prized for its strength and its "swirl" pattern known as gneiss. The Tidal Grey was quarried to use for buildings, curbing, pavers, and for chicken feed supplement. The granite of Panola Mountain, however, was never quarried because of its softer texture.

Granite Ruins - taken March 2017.

It is believed that these ruins once served several purposes, including a gas station, store, and a residence. In previous decades, it was not uncommon for a location to serve as a person's workplace as well as his home, especially in remote areas, as this would have been decades ago.

As the use of the automobile became more popular, gas stations appeared on the landscape from busy main streets to rural areas.  Especially in the country, it was not uncommon for a gas station to be added to existing structures or businesses, such as restaurants, repair shops, or general stores.  This may explain the several different structures clustered together that the visitor sees today.

The ruins are unstable in some places, so please do not touch or climb on them.

Window View - taken May 2015.

Parking available at the Arabia Alliance parking lot on Klondike Road. Take the trail that begins at the SE corner of the parking lot and follow it approximately 500 feet to the ruins. The cache is outside of the ruins in a corner.
