'Big Brother' é um personagem fictício no romance 1984 de George Orwell. Na sociedade descrita por Orwell, todas as pessoas estão sob constante vigilância das autoridades, principalmente por ecrãs com câmara, sendo constantemente lembrados pela frase propaganda do Estado: 'o Grande Irmão (Big Brother, no original) zela por ti' ou 'o Grande Irmão está-te a observar' ('Big Brother is watching you').

Desde a publicação de Nineteen Eighty-Four, as expressões 'Big Brother' ou 'Grande Irmão' são usadas geralmente para descrever qualquer excesso de controle ou autoridade por uma figura, ou tentativas por parte do governo de aumentar a vigilância, ou iniciativas (sejam de governos, órgãos de governo ou empresas) que culminam em violação e invasão de privacidade.
