The University of Sheffield was formed from the merger of three colleges; the Sheffield School of Medicine; Firth College and Sheffield Technical School. The foundation of the University occurred in 1905 and was enabled by penny donations from factory workers of Sheffield who could see that the founding of a University in the city would benefit the city’s economy, their health and the future of their children. On the opening of the University there were only 114 full-time students but these numbers were boosted to a short-lived peak of 1000 in 1919 by the return of ex-servicemen after the First World War. The University now has 50 Academic departments, over 26,000 students and 7,000 members of staff.
