Chapin's automotive venture, which Chapin named the Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan in honor of Joseph L. Hudson.

A prototype vehicle was on the road in early 1905. Production commence when The Detroit Auto Vehicle Co. acquired the Detroit Novelty Machine Co. factory located at 65-71 Catherine Street in Detroit, MI.
