The Hammer-Sommer Auto Carriage Co. Detroit, Mi 1902-1904

An American Automobile called the Hammer-Sommer was produced by The Hammer-Sommer Auto Carriage Co. of Detroit, Michigan from 1902 to 1904. In the spring of 1904 the Hammer-Sommer partnership was dissolved. Herman A Sommer & William J. Sommer went off to built the Sommer automobile and Henry F. Hammer built the Hammer automobile. Unfortunately the two auto producers failed by 1907. The 1903 Hammer-Summer Runabout was equipped with a one cylinder engine that had a horsepower rating of 6.7 on a wheelbase of 80 inch. Three different Runabouts with different options were built, a $900.00 Model A, $800.00 Model B & a $700.00 Model C Runabout.

The Hammer-Sommer was redesigned in 1904 and was priced at $1,250.00. Shown below are a 1904 Hammer-Sommer five passenger Touring Car and Model D two passenger Runabout without the detachable rear entrance Tonneau. Built on a 80 inch wheelbase and a Renault type hood the Hammer-Sommer was a well built American Automobile. The upholstering was leather of the finest grade and the body finish was in dark green striped in gold. An optional canopy top could be furnished at $125 to $150.

The 1904 Hammer-Summer was equipped with a two cylinder water cooled double opposed horizontal engine that developed 12 horsepower. It had a bore of 4 inch and a stroke of 5 inches. The planetary transmission had two speeds forward and one reverse and was enclosed in an oil tight case.
