The King Motor Car Co. Detroit, Michigan and Buffalo, NY 1911-1924 (1923-24 in Buffalo, NY)

Charles B. King built his first American Automobile with a 4 cylinder engine in 1896 and it became the first gasoline automobile to be successfully driven on the streets of Detroit, Michigan.

In 1910 Chas. King created a new four cylinder rated at 36 horsepower and another American Automobile establishing The King Motor Car Company in 1911. Kings first models were named the "Silent 36". For 1911 and 1912 The King Motor Car Co. produced a $1565.00 Touring Car, $1565.00 Roadster and a $2,265.00 Coupe.

Features of the King long stroke "Silent Six" engine included four cylinders cast in block, the stroke was 3 13/16 inches, bore was 5 1/8 inches, large intake and exhaust valves. Lubrication of the silent six was done with the encased flywheel that lifted oil to the top of the engine to deliver oil to all gears and bearings instead of using a typical oil pump. One other unique feature of the 115 inch wheelbase King automobiles were the long and flat shock absorber type rear springs that was patented by The King Motor Car Co. The transmission was a selective type three speeds and reverse. You could get in and out of the King due to the center controls and left hand drive, all unique features of the King Automobile.

In 1913 The King Motor Car Co. went into receivership due to over expansion and lack of capital. The company was purchased by Artemus Ward of New York and King production continued till 1924. Charles B. King remained with the company as an engineer.

The 1916 and 1917 King Eight automobiles were made in four body styles of exceptional comfort, convenience and luxury. A King Eight 60 horsepower seven passenger Touring Car was priced at $1,350.00, King Four 40-45 horsepower five passenger Touring Car $1,150.00, three passenger roadster $1,585 and a seven passenger Sedan $2,150.00. From 1918 to 1920 the King line up was about the same with only price changes. C. A. Finnegan purchased The King Motor Car Co. in 1923 and moved the automobile firm to Buffalo, NY and production stopped in 1924.

1917 King three passenger Roadster Specifications included 120 inch wheelbase, wood wheels, 34 x 4 inch tires, V-8 engine, 29 horsepower, self starter, electric lights, six volt system, three speed selective sliding transmission and shaft drive. 1923 King four passenger Sedanette Specifications included 124 inch wheelbase, wood or wire wheels, 32 x 4 1/2 inch, V-8 engine, 29 horsepower, three speed transmission and shaft drive.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has given the Belle Isle Cachers exclusive permission to place all geocaches on Belle Isle State Park. Please be respectful to the park, its management and all other visitors during your time here.

This park is very busy year round, please use extreme stealth at all times as every area is being used by others. Rock hides give great views around the island, we have marked the cache location to help with your finds so please replace just as you found them.
