Geocaching HQ Admin: Because logging benchmarks on Geocaching.com is no longer possible, Geocaching HQ is archiving challenge caches which require finding and logging benchmarks. See this release notes thread for more information.

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Twenty (20) Counties Benchmark Challenge!

Cache is at posted coordinates but you must meet the requirements of this challenge in order to log a find.

Please be aware: this is down a dirt/gravel road with no phone nearby. You need to be cognizant of the weather/road conditions and whether you have cell phone reception. Travel here at your own risk. Park carefully and check before opening your vehicle door or stepping out and across the lane; the residents drive quickly down this road.

The Rules:

To complete this challenge you must meet the following conditions.

  1. Find and log 20 benchmarks - one in each of 20 different counties.

Your qualifiers (in this case, your benchmarks) need to be loggable (and logged) on geocaching.com for them to count. Only Found benchmarks count (not destroyed, looked for it, think it's there, etc.).

You need to personally find it and log it here. No arm-chair benchmarking. No “told my friend where it is and they found it for me” benchmarking. You need to discover it, be there, see it, log it!

Thank you & Happy Benchmarking! Happy Caching! Happy Trails!

Logging Requirements:

When you log your 20 benchmarks, please list the following:

  1. Permanent Identifier (PID) (listed in the format AB1234 (two letters and four numerals))
  2. Designation (the name, called a designation, has no set format. It could be JONES or E 37 RESET or WASHINGTON MONUMENT 1913 or simply X 429)
  3. The County, State in which you found the benchmark
  4. The Date you found the benchmark

    Additional Information:

    • Any posted "Found It" logs that do not meet the requirements of this challenge will be deleted.
    • If you have not met the requirements of this challenge, you may visit this cache, sign the log book and post a note on this page. When you have met the requirements of this challenge, you may then post a "Found It" log without having to revisit the cache.
    • FTF Honors go to the first person (or team) to Qualify and Sign; if multiple people signed at the same time and qualify, Co-FTF works.
    • Please contact stargazingwoman with any questions.
    • Note: The attributes reflect the cache location, not the various benchmark locations.
    • Note: The D/T reflects the various distances you may walk/hike/climb/drive and the research you may find yourself doing in order to locate 20 benchmarks, 1 in each of 20 different counties. It is unlikely for a person to find these all in one day. Some are easier to find than others. Please stay safe and legal and honor "no trespassing" and "private property" signs and other laws.

Although this is not required, Good bench mark hunters will post the following items in their benchmark logs.

    1. Coordinates on your GPS, phone, or other device.
    2. Elevation reading.
    3. Close-up photo of the disk, rod, or other bench mark type.
    4. A second photo from a few feet away showing the mark and the general surroundings/location.

I hope you enjoy benchmarking as much as I do!
