Geocache Description:

150 Geocaches have been hidden to guide your exploration of NC as you traverse highways and by-ways across the state as you learn from those fighting and those keeping the home fires burning during the Civil War, 1861 - 1865.

Thirty caches are located in five different regions throughout NC. Instructions for sending the documentation are in the passport. Once all five regions are completed, you have earned a special NC Civil War trackable geocoin. Mail the passport to the address inside the passport – then your passport will be returned with your unique coin.

All of the containers are the same - camouflaged 6 inch PVC tubes - the code word you need for your passport is inside the container on a laminated card and also taped on the container that holds the log sheet. Date your logbook and add your code word in the numbered area for the cache. As the containers may become over tightened, carry a TOTT to ease the opening process.

Passports will be available at the event, some Civil War Museums in NC, and via mail if you send me you address or you can download your passport here.

Thomasville - Caring for the Sick and Wounded

During the Civil War, Thomasville became a hospital center that treated the sick and wounded, civilian and soldier alike. From 1862 to 1865, a local doctor, D.W. Smith, operated a smallpox hospital just outside of town. In March 1865, Surgeon Simon Baruch arrived in Thomasville with orders to prepare a "hosptial depot" to serve sick and wounded Confederate soldiers in North Carolina. The need for such services had grown acute as Confederate forces under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston battled Union Gen. William T. Sherman's army during his Carolinas Campaign.

By the time the first 280 wounded men arrived by train from the Averasboro battlefield that month, the hospital depot included several buildings. The Pinnix Tobacco Factory and the Baptist and Methodist churches were used to shelter the trooops, while the office of the L.L. Thomas Hotel served as a headquarters.

Preparing for the wounded soldiers' arrival and maintaining the hospitals were community efforts. Students from the Glen Anna Female Seminary helped to fill pine-straw mattresses, while local women prepared food and served as nurses and local doctors assisted the Confederate surgeons. The Thomasville hospital depot provided care for hundreds of soldiers from both armies until it closed in the summer of 1865.
